The Mystical One
Mount Everest, 8850 m
There is no other mountain where a thin line between triumph and tragedy is drawn so faintly. The highest summit of the world, the earth's third pole is a source of longings and expectations that turn into unbelievable shapes in the clouds surrounding Mount Everest. It was about 150 years ago when Andrew Waugh put down a notice on his map concerning one of Himalayas' peaks whose dimensions could not be compared with anything else. In 1856, the Royal Geographical Society named the mountain after its surveyor Sir Georg Everest, the general of British India Survey, who took an excellent geographical measurements (8.840m) at that time. Because it was only in 1992 that a GPS helped to set more precise number - 8.850 m. First who tried to reach the roof of the world were the British at the end of 1920's. The mysterious disappearance of George Leigh Mallory and Andrew Irvin, who in 1924 were supposed to reach the summit, became a legend. They were believed to be the first even after the first proven ascend to the top undertaken by Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tensing Norgay in 1953. In1999 news reports announced a fantastic piece of news - American mountaineers found G.I.Mallory's body perfectly stored in ice at the height of 8.250 m. If the alpine history is ever going to change remains a question.
